In Japan the real leader of the country were the shogun, who were at the top of the feudal system in the social classes underneath the royals known as the Kings and Queens.
The Tokugawa period is also called the Edo period, this happened between 1603 through to 1867.
The shogunate was founded by Tokugawa Leyasu. Tokugawa Leyasu took control during 1542 through to 1616.
During this period of time Toyotomi Hideyoshi also tried to seize power.
During approximately around the 1500's all power was in Japan, which was torn apart by warfare between the competition of the feudal lords. Known as the Daimyo for nearly a century.
